Internet in China

In recent years China has seen the biggest, quickest and most impressive growth of internet use anywhere in the world.

In 2008, China overtook America for having the world’s largest number of netizens (wangmin 网民), with their online population growing to 253 million. The China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) – a government office for internet statistics – releases biannual reports on usage in the country, and their reports show that this number has grown from 210 million in 2007, an increase of more than tenfold since 2001.

The internet has also fundamentally transformed the Chinese landscape of public communication. Chinese netizens are articulating, posting and sharing their views in portals, websites and blogs.

This section introduces Chinese search machines and video streamings as general information, as well as websites of particular importance providing official information on the Chinese government and its leaders.
